Huge Tyrolean hand-decorated chest with floral patterns and precious baroque, ideal for mountain furnishings handcrafted in classic ‘700 Baroque Tyrolean style. The magnificent and precious decorations are typical of the first half of the 18th-century mountain furnishings, from Val Pusteria.

Model Description

Model Structure

The structure has an elevating shelf, the frame (central part of the chest), is processed by framework and it is enriched in the front by a prominent diamond shaped cornice, as in vogue in Val Pusteria’s furnishings. The front part is surrounded by a wide band, which has been designed in order to paint the precious decorations. The body is supported by “arch”-shaped legs, opened both in the front and on the sides. The chest is available also as a sideboard cabinet, with a fixed shelf and 2 leaf door, with the same shape and features.

Raw Material

The big dimension chest is completely made of solid spruce wood, a soft wood with a large fibre, typically used by craftsmen in Trentino and ideal for decorations.

Manufacture

The huge Tyrolean hand-decorated chest with floral patterns and precious baroque, ideal for mountain furnishings, is assembled with some fir boards linked to one another by slot-in joints, which enable excellent stability in time. The sections (sides, front, bottom, and back) are linked to one another by “double-rebated” joints, with the same techniques used in the 17th and 18th century. The shaping of the legs is hand-made and outlined by a plywood profile. The chest is hand-polished to remove all the sharp corners and then there is the decoration by hand. The chest is lacquered with “gesso Bologna” (semiliquid pastry mixture of chalk and calcium carbonate dissolved in water), applied with a palette knife and dried. The most elaborated step is the polychrome painting, with water-based tempera and performed with thick and thin brushes. The frontal part of the chest is decorated with Siena yellow on a red base, whereas the central panels are painted in beige with geometric patterns and amazing floral decorations in bright red, dark green, light blue and yellow inside. Last but not least the meticulous coating with brown earth dust, which gives to the chest an old-fashioned look. The decorations are established by transparent alcohol-based shellac applied with a brush and protected by soft virgin beeswax applied with a cotton cloth.

The big dimension chest is handcrafted and customizable for dimensions, structure (you can choose the classic chest or the sideboard cabinet, with a fixed shelf and 2 leaf door) and colours. The huge Tyrolean hand-decorated chest with floral patterns and precious baroque, ideal for mountain furnishings, is a faithful reproduction of the original chest, which dates back to the first half of 18th century from Val Pusteria, Trentino-Alto Adige, in '700 Baroque Tyrolean style.

Historical notes and mobile curiosities

The original chest is at the entrance of a restaurant in Monguelfo – Tesino. Thanks to the owners, Vangelista Mobili has collected important pictures both for the structure and type of decorations.
