Introduction

Big dimensions early 17th-century Lombard-Venetian style inlaid cupboard in walnut wood for bedroom and hall. The furniture has an important and complex processing and it is completely hand-made, 100% Made in Italy.

Model Description

Model Structure

The cupboard has 2 side pillars that enclose the double leaf door. The supporting legs are shaped with an elegant moulding. Inside the cupboard there are 2 adjustable shelves with a rack and a clothes hanger. The back is processed with a cross framework, typical in Venetian furniture crafting. Locks and hinges are reproduced in the same shape from the original.

Raw Material

The early 17th-century Lombard-Venetian style inlaid cupboard in walnut wood of big dimensions is made of solid spruce wood on the inside. The external coating (veneered with a 3 mm thick layer) is made of a wide range of precious woods such as Ferrarese walnut root and cherrywood, whereas the inlays are made of exotic woods such as ebony, boxwood, maple and Brazilian rosewood. The upper cornice and the base are made of walnut wood. The double leaf door’s hinges and keyhole covers are made of bronze.

Manufacture

This early 17th-century Lombard-Venetian style inlaid cupboard in walnut wood is made with the same techniques used by Venetian craftsmen of the period. The central architecture is in solid spruce wood processed with 3 thick crossed layers to preserve the stability and it is coated on the surface with a 3 mm thick veneering. Then, the geometrical inlays, completely hand-made, are put together with the thickness of 3mm in vogue in the period; thinner inlays are low-quality inlays. In the middle of the inlays there is a precious Ferrarese walnut root, “open grain” mirrored. After the inlays are put together, the following step is the polishing with some abrasive papers to remove impurities or scratches. The finely shaped upper cornice is worked with a precious vertical grain, as well as the supporting legs. Then we polish the furniture with water-based natural clays dissolved in water to give the right colour to the furniture. The cupboard is then manually antiqued with stone and rollers for an old-fashioned look. Last but not least, the furniture is polished with a pad soaked of straw yellow oil and pumice stone, in a circular motion on the whole cupboard. This type of finishing enhances the precious grain and colour of the inlays.

Historical notes and mobile curiosities

The cupboard is hand-crafted with refined inlaying techniques and original drawings, thanks to the talent of Lombard craftsmen who crafted the original cupboard, currently part of Piero Accorsi’s museum private collection in Turin. We have been able to reproduce the cupboard thanks to pictures, shapes and high-quality technical drawings of the period because it is impossible to craft build a faithful replica with modern computerised technology machines. The cupboard is completely crafted and inlaid by hand with traditional building methods of the 17th and 18th century. Thanks for our love and passion for inlaid cupboards, in addition to the capability of keeping the ancient furniture crafting techniques alive, Vangelista Mobili 1960 is the only company able to hand-craft precious inlaid furniture, with the typical uniqueness of 100% Made in Italy.
