Introduction

Rusticated cupboard with walnut wood inlays in 17th-century Emilian Luigi XIV style. The rusticated structure and herringbone inlays give to the cupboard an impressive visual impact.

Model Description

Model Structure

The structure of the rusticated cupboard with walnut wood inlays is typical of the Emilian furniture crafting 17th century style; the cupboard has double leaf door built with a framework and divided in 3 symmetrical parts, with a “rusticated” panel inside made by a diamond moulding and inlaid “herringbone” grain. The inlays are enriched by a geometric pattern thread wich contours the outline, made of maple, boxwood and cherry wood. The sides have the same rustication, too. The structure of the cupboard is embellished by a base and a widely shaped cornice, typical in Emilian furniture. Inside there is a shelf at the bottom and a clothes hanger on the top.

Raw Material

The cupboard is made of precious walnut wood, the rusticated panels of the shitters are in walnut wood with a “herringbone” grain, veneered with a thickness of 3mm (huge and precious veneering), whereas the interior part is in lime wood.

Manufacture

The cupboard is hand-crafted with the same technique used in 17th century: shutters and sides are assembled with mortise and tenon, whereas the cornice and the base are milled by a piece of walnut wood. The main feature of this rusticated cupboard with walnut wood inlays in 17th-century Emilian Luigi XIV is the final step before polishing: the planing. Planed by hand all over the outer structure, with an old technique which makes the thickness thin by hand planes, the furniture has an old-fashioned final look, enhancing the wood pores. The furniture is polished by a pad soaked with shellac and yellow-straw oil to increase its brilliance and highlight the beautiful grain and chiaroscuro effects of walnut wood.

Model History

The rigorous line in contrast to the refined inlays is typical of Emilian furniture crafting, especially the middle of Emilia, and the original cupboard dates back to mid-17th century.

Historical notes and mobile curiosities

After the first years of 17th century, Emilian furnishing changed. Craftsmen begin to insert inlays in furniture with rigorous lines to soften and enrich the furniture made by Emilian workshops. The rusticated cupboard with walnut wood inlays in 17th century Emilian style is a valuable example of this style and the original model , which dates back to the mid-17th century, is in palazzo del Buon Signore in Bagnara di Romagna. According to Vangelista Mobili 1960’s informations, there were two rusticated cupboards, facing each other, in the hall, as it was in vogue in the period – people used to have symmetrical funriture in their houses. We have reproduced every detail of this cupboard thanks to technical drawings, shapes and pictures. Thanks to our strong passion for ancient furnishing, Vangelista is one of the few handcraft companies able to replicate, hand-craft and polish precious high-qualityi craftsmanship furniture, in our art laboratory 100& Made in Italy.
