All 4 sides of the rounded '700 baroque Venetian Luigi XV style centre office desk inlaid in walnut-root is symmetrically processed: there are 4 drawers and a removable tablet as a book or computer support, whereas the frame is supported by 4 legs finely shaped and the sides and the frontal part are bounded by a well-shaped band.

Raw Material

The rounded '700 baroque Venetian Luigi XV style desk with 5 drawers is completely made of solid spruce wood, a soft and compact wood ideal for veneering. The external coating is made of flamed walnut and Ferrarese walnut-root with threads inlaid in exotic rose wood. The handles are made of bronze and reproduced from the original desk.

Manufacture

The internal structure in solid spruce wood is assembled with staves (wooden axes 8-10 cm wide), shaped and put together to obtain the right shape. Then the framework is smoothed by hand with rasps and abrasive papers for a perfect shaping without edges. The following and most complicated step is the coating. The desk is veneered in walnut and Ferrarese walnut-root glued with natural glue; in the middle there is a thread inlaid in exotic rose wood with precious "head" grain. The main feature of this desk is the important thickness of veneering (4 mm) and book-match processing, symmetric in all middle part, as in vogue in 18th century Venetian craftsmanship. The drawers are rounded and they are assembled inside by handmade dovetail joints. The desktop has the same shape of the lower body and its main feature are the edge details, where we have put a sophisticated thread in bois de rose. The honey-coloured glossy finishing highlights the chromatism of the walnut and the decorations of the walnut-root. The furniture is polished with natural clays for the right colour and antiqued by hand with stone, established by shellac applied with a brush and protected by straw-yellow oil and pumice stone with 18 circular movements. This step is handmade and in line with 18th-century methods and natural products. The desk is designed, handcrafted and polished in our art laboratory, 100% Made in Italy.

Historical notes and mobile curiosities

The original desk is in Palazzo Pisani Moretta, Venice. Thanks to our studies, we went back to the owners. Francesco Pisani Moretta, the last male descendant of the noble family, commissioned this amazing rounded '700 baroque Venetian Luigi XV style centre office desk inlaid in walnut-root with 5 drawers to the craftsmen as a gift for his beloved daughter Chiara. The desk is currently in the hall - precisely in the office - of the second floor in the palace.
