Model Description

Model Structure

The centre room desk is decorated on all 4 sides: the front has 3 "s" shaped drawers with precious transversal grain, whereas on the sides there are 2 drawers on the left side and 2 drawers on the right side. The desktop is embellished by a moulded cornice which surrounds all the perimeter- The 4 supporting legs are sabre shaped, the typical shape of Venetian furniture in the early 19th century. The desk is ideal for offices or entrances and both for classic and contemporary furniture, as a contrast.

Raw Material

The centre room desk for office is completely made of solid spruce wood and veneered on the outside with a coating in precious walnut wood; the inlays are in precious white maple and pinkish rosewood. The handles of the drawers are made of bronze, hand chiselled and reproduced with the same shape and incision of the original.

Manufacture

The frame of the desk is assembled with mortise and tenon joints - a typical technique used by Venetian craftsmen - among the legs, the sides and the front. The desktop and the lower part are coated by a 4 mm veneering in rare woods (the thickness of veneering makes the furniture even more precious). The desktop is inlaid with a herringbone in walnut wood and the border is inlaid with a thread with the same processing; in the middle section, there is a geometric inlay in exotic woods such as maple, American walnut, ash, rosewood and padouk, in different colours and amazing chromatism. The same woods are used for inlays on the drawers. The legs are made of walnut wood and sabre shaped in the òast section. The desk is polished with techniques in vogue during the 18th century, that is natural clays for the right colour and antiqued with stone and established with shellac applied with a brush. The final and most important step is the finishing with a pad soaked with shellac and straw-yellow oil; thanks to the circular motions, the furniture has a glossy appearance and enhances the grain and the chromatism of walnut.

The original Venetian Luigi Filippo centre room desk for office, with inlays in Walnut, is in Villa Badoer, Fratta Polesine (Rovigo). In the main entrance, there are two of these desks, mirrored one to the other. The feature of this furniture with shaped legs denotes the typical Vicentino furnishings when the craftsmen began to enlighten and lift the furniture with supports to enlighten the whole structure. In that period the desk was used as a desk, but also as a lamp case and support.
