The luxury hand-decorated chest in 18th Venetian Baroque style is handcrafted and assembled with interlocks whereas axes made of solid spruce wood are put together with a slot-in joint system stable over time. The most difficult and elaborated steps are lacquering and decoration. A semi-liquid mixture called gesso Bologna is applied with a brush, then the furniture is hand decorated with polychromatic water-based tempera. The refined decorations show floral and baroque patterns and the background colour is lobster red; we create this shade in our laboratory. The baroque drawings are saffron yellow coloured. Beige is the main colour inside the outline, and floral patterns are painted with a variety of very thin brushes, with almost real petals and blossoms. The decorations are antiqued with brown dust for an antiqued effect, whereas the craquelure (fine pattern of dense cracking in the exterior part of the furniture) makes the chest look old. The decorations are then fixed by shellac established with a brush and protected, both inside and outside, by French white beeswax.
